In the Know News for Austin IFMA Members

Issue Number 5, 2014

From the President:

Greetings All! Hard to believe that October has already93crept=94 up on us with Halloween right around the corner and the perpetual hope of cooler weather arriving... soon please!

I want to recognize our 2014 Sponsors for the support they provide to our chapter. Please take a moment to thank these sponsors the next time you see them at our luncheons or other Austin IFMA events.

Our 2014 Medalist Sponsors are:

  • Platinum - Cort- Terry Swets
  • Gold - AFS- Scott Slaughter
  • Silver - Texas Building Systems- Todd Coleman
  • Bronze - Corporate Floor- Brenda Booth
  • Bronze - JPM- Patti May

Please keep these sponsors in mind when identifying vendors to receive an RFP for services or materials that you may be pursuing.

From all the feedback received and the preliminary financials, the 2014 Golf Outing was a tremendous success. I want to thank Star Ranch Golf Course, our sponsors, golfers, volunteers, recruiters and the members of the Golf Committee for their participation and contributions. All of the contributions made were the chief contributing factor to this event=92s success. A special shout out for Crystal Green who worked tirelessly to ensure that this event came together as flawlessly as possible.

In September, many of your Austin IFMA chapter members converged at World Workplace in New Orleans and NOLA will never be the same. A great time seemed to be had by all from start to finish. Not only did we have the opportunity for some great educational sessions and networking opportunities but, there was a shin-dig or two that was attended. With ABM and Corporate Floor parties being held at the House of Blues, the IFMA Welcome Celebration being held at the Mardi Gras warehouse and the famous Cort Party being held at the Marriott near the convention center, it was truly a grand time.

Our upcoming 2014 events will be the November 13th luncheon with a community service opportunity at Sammy=92s House following this luncheon. In December, the Holiday Gala luncheon will take place. The details are still being finalized with more information coming soon.

Please contact any Board members should you have any questions or to find out how to become more involved in your chapter. I look forward to seeing each of you at one or more of our upcoming events.

Tech Topic

 Tim Geier - Editor

I am somewhat old schooled when it comes to maintaining a building and its infrastructure equipment. I have always been solidly behind in house preventative maintenance and repair. With systems becoming more complex and the shortage of highly skilled building engineers, combined with frequent organizational change, I am becoming more open to at least some outsourcing of what used to be considered preventative and minor maintenance. Here is an article from Plant Services Magazine that offers insight into the area of outsourced maintenance. Read more for a different perspective.

Community Service

Todd Coleman - Community Service Chair

After a summer hiatus from our service activity, we are gearing up for a work activity day following the November 13th luncheon click here to see a list of the work items most beneficial to our community service partner, Sammy's House.

 2014 Golf Tournament Results

First Place Team - Intern'l Systems of America (ISA)

Crystal Green - Golf Committee Chair

It was a great turnout this year, and the weather was very nice. We got a bit of drizzle, and some people got hit with a very quick downpour, but then the clouds kept the heat away.  96 Golfers participated in this exciting event.

It would not have been nearly as successful without the help and support of a fine group of individuals who dedicated their time to help put this event together. A big thanks to those listed below.

Terry Swets - Cort Furniture
Aaron Paul - Koetter Fire
Dwight McDuffie - Knight Restoration
Patty May - JPM
Aimee Janousek - VISA
Joe Latteo - Bell County

IFMA celebrated another strong turnout at its flagship event, the World Workplace Conference and Expo, held this year in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Sept. 17-19, 2014.
